Hand-hooked Primitive Rugs & Accessories

I hope my passion for rug hooking shows in my work, and I hope you enjoy browsing these pages of my handcrafted goods. I love to imagine, as I create, where each piece will end up. I have been fortunate to meet and email with many customers who have found an appreciation for my work, and a place in their homes for some of my pieces. I have sold art work since 1984. Many of my pieces have found their way into homes all around the world. That continues to be my inspiration and spurs my enthusiasm every time I start a new painting or hooking. I hope you find one that you love.

Or, I can hook a rug of any commercially available pattern that you might choose. I work in primitive wool cuts (1/4-inch and larger). If you love the antique primitive look with lots of textures and an aged feel, that's what I do best! Interested? Let's talk!

Antique Adaptation

Primitive Flower Table Mat

Autumnal Handbag

This is my adaptation of an antique hooked rug. Hooked with 100% wool strips on a linen foundation. Softly faded wool colors of overdyed and as-is wool makes this primitive pattern sing

 Measures 13 x 17 inches and is bound with traditional black twill tape.

The piece is the model used for the project photo shoot at Create and Decorate magazine.

This beautiful bag is large enough for travel, work, or just around the town. I hooked the oak leaf motif and wide border on the front of the bag using wool that I hand marbled and overdyed. Double handles are sewn in and a large burgundy antique button provides the stability for the wool loop closure.

The back of the bag has a hooked block of two beautiful textured wools - the cream and camel checked wool I used for the handles forms the outer border of the block and a lovely tobacco wool fills the center.

The linen foundation of this bag forms the outer border around the hooked panels and there are side insets of the cream and camel checked wool, which allow this bag to open wide! Bag has a stabilized flat bottom.

Measures 12 x 11 x 4 inches with a handle drop of 14 inches (you can carry it comfortably on your shoulder if you wish.) This bag is the model used for the project photo shoot at Create and Decorate magazine.

Jacks All Around

I hooked this several years ago. The design is by another artist but I can't for the life of me remember who! If you know, please email and tell me so I can give due credit. It's an awesome Halloween piece.

100% wool on linen backing. Measures 16 x 13. Edges are bound with 100% wool yarn in variegated fall colors, for lasting endurance. Backed with wool and fitted with hanging rings - click for photo.

I just love this fun table mat with pennies and jacks. It would be a great addition to your spooky decorations! Design is by the Potted Pear, hooked by me. I really love the colors of Fall!

Punkin' Gal

Three Pumpkins in a Row

This is another piece I hooked a long time ago (never found a place for her.) The design is by another artist but I can't remember who it is! If you know, please email and tell me so I can give due credit.

She's a primitive pumpkin' head gal with a candy corn body. Whimsical and fun for the Halloween season. Measures 17 x 9. Hooked in 100% wool on linen and bound with a variegated fall color yarn in 100% wool. Makes a fun wall hanging!

Three in a row - white, brown, and orange . . . pumpkins and gourds just say 'Fall is here!' A great mat for your harvest table - it will work all through the autumn months.

Summer Crow

I love this rug design by Tara Darr. I hooked this rug with lots of mottled, overdyed wools giving it a deep, rich color palette. I especially love the movement in the background - it looks awesome against my hardwood floors. Unfortunately, I cannot keep every rug I hook, so this one is up for sale.

Measures 23 x 16 inches. Hooked with 100% wool on linen backing. Bound with 100% wool yarn in a variegated gold - beautiful!

All American Sheep Mat

A great accessories for all those patriotic holidays, or all year 'round! Simple flag with primitive lettering "Liberty" across the stripes in gold. Single star signifying One Nation. Backed with off-white wool and bound with a yarn-whipped edge. Measures 15.5 x 9.5 inches.

A fun, primitive mat for sheep and wool lovers. Flag is done with beautiful overdyed colors. Backed with a blue checked wool and bound with a yarn-whipped edging. Measures 9 x 11 inches.

I Got the Blues - Table Mat

Grape Wine - Table Mat

Many shades and textures of blue make up this side-by-side table mat. Actual colors are bit more grey and faded than my photo - I just could not get this photo to tone down.

My design idea was to make an inside out image from one side to the other. Wool that is on the outside of the left rectangle is on the inside of the right one, and each color change follows suit.

Bound with twill tape in a neutral tan. Measures 10.5 x 8.5 inches. A nice size for any side table or use as a hot pad.

Every time I look at this mat it reminds me of grapes - it's color scheme of luscious magentas, purples, and blues with just a hint of green. Like a grape arbor loaded with grapes ready for harvest. Lots of textured wools give this mat a subdued palette of deep color.

The design of pen wipes and shells creates a pretty cross in the center of the mat.

Bound with strips of wool in deep burgundy. Measures 10.5 x 9 inches.

Flying Jack Wall Hanging

A wonderful hit 'n' miss style chair pad in gorgeous tones of rust, green, and gold wool . . . it will give that little chair in the corner such a lift! Use it as a mat on a side table or even as a hot pad on the dining table.

Edges are finished with a beautiful, variegated gold, wool tapestry yarn whipped over a rolled edge.

Okay, is this a fun piece or what?! Designed by D. Shawver and hooked by me, this wildly primitive Jack has sprouted wings and taken flight. His tombstone shaped background is set against another deep, night blue background. He looks as if he might fly right off the wall!

Upcycled Sweater Pillow- Leaves & Swirls

Upcycled Sweater Pillow- Neckline

A unique, one-of-a-kind pillow created from a 100% wool sweater. The soft, muted tones of this wool pillow will accent any decor. A men's herringbone design, 100% wool sweater is now a great accent pillow. Two-toned gray herringbone forms the background on top of which I dry felted a square of gorgeous hand over-dyed green wool. Deep rusty red felted roving follows the line of the wool inset and felted leaves and swirls form the design at the center.

The ribbed waist band of the original sweater is now at the top of the pillow, embellished with three beautiful vintage buttons in greens and red.

Measures 14 x 14 inches. A new commercial pillow form was used inside to give this pillow a nice, full feeling.

Another unique, one-of-a-kind pillow. This pillow is a companion to the square pillow with leaves and swirls seen at left. This pillow was the neckline and shoulders of the original gray herringbone sweater. After felting the 100% wool sweater, I created this fun pillow using the V-neck at the top and adding patches of the same over-dyed green wool to the front. Rusty red embroidery fixes the neckline inset and patches, and adds another punch of color that coordinates perfectly with the colors of the companion pillow.
