Issue:June-July 2010 |
Welcome . . .Hello friends . . . it's time for an update from Folk 'n' Fiber. Summertime on the north coast is in full swing and those little budding flowers have blown up into glorious blooms - and so have the weeds. It seems we wait so long for summer to arrive each year, and it goes by in a flash. So my goal this summer is to find lots of fun things to do here along Lake Erie, and make the most of my summer 2010. I hope you are enjoying your summer, wherever you are! |

Fraktur Rug Progress
Last time I told you
about my love of frakturs and that I was designing a rug incorporating elements
of fraktur design. The progress has been slow with so many other chores to
attend these days, but I try to hook a little each day. I chose wools in colors
that reminded me of the old frakturs - saturated colors in reds, greens, teal
blue, and golds. I threw in a few textures to mimic some of the hand-inked
designs used on the birds. The people are the biggest challenge in primitive
hooking - features are not prominent or detailed, so getting faces to look like
faces takes a little time. I am anxious to get to the horse in the center - I
will show that later. So here is a photo of my progress so far . . . click to
make it bigger.
I have a new hooking frame from Bee Creek Ltd. and I am loving it! It's all hardwood floor stand with a tilt/swivel gripper top. I have two different sized tops for it to make hooking small and large projects a breeze. It has made working on this rug so much easier. I am offering this model from my Rug Hooking: Frames page if you want to see more. |

A Day Trip If you are anywhere near Ohio, plan on a trip to Sauder Village in August for the annual Rug Show. You can stay the week, overnight, or just make it a special day. Classes, workshops, and all your favorite vendors will be there. The Rug Show in the exhibition hall alone is worth the trip. Mary Burton's rug hooked ark and animals will be on display this year - be sure to follow the link to see this amazing piece of artwork! This is a not-to-be-missed event - I hope to see you there! |
